Boxing: A Cultural History Boxing: A Cultural History by Kasia Boddy

My review

rating: 5 of 5 stars
I read this for research, but it is well-done and gives a fun overview of how boxing has been used to represent different struggles through art, books, film, music, and cultural artifacts in general. Everything from Joe Louis' influence on a young Malcolm X to boxing and Brecht's plays, to Futurists use of the boxer in their art, to Boxing in Film Noir. It's also chock full of high quality color reproductions of many of the visual works. The back has a filmography with dates. Nice resource for anyone interested in Boxing history.

Small Press Expo 2008

I went to the small press expo over the weekend. There were some interesting talks on collaboration between artists and writers and one on space in comics writing.

Everyone was so excited to show you their work, it was overwhelming but had really high energy. The above picture is from Benjamin Marra's website. I bought a book from him about a made up East European country, and he threw in a giallo-style comic set in the 1980s. It was pretty grotesque. Other favorites included meeting Derf, the man behind 'Punk Rock and Trailer Parks' , finding a mini-comic about a cat who goes on a bad date, and stumbling across Sam Sharpe's mini-comics Sam Sharpe's website. There was a lot of really good art there.
