library of congress meanies.

I know you think the library of congress looks like this picture, but it doesn't. Those books are behind glass. The real library of congress, the one that is a 'library', with, you know, books, was built in the 1960s and there is no gold, only brutalism.

I went with Lola and Marisse there today to check out the top research facilities, brought call numbers and everything. After going through the process to get a research pass, we went back to the first person we encountered, the performance arts archives gatekeeper, who was skeptical that we were researchers in the beginning and was surprised to see us return. I gave her my call numbers, she recopied them, I went to another person, gave them the call numbers to go get my book and looked around a bit. They have Gershwin's and Rachmaninoff's desks there, but don't touch them. The lady told me that. I was going to write at them, take the remaining energies surrounding the artifacts and manifest them into a creative vortex, summoning these artists from hell to do my bidding... but she told me not to, so I didn't. Then the guy who was supposed to go get what I asked for (some research for the graphic novel) walked up to me and asked if maybe I would prefer to have something that was easier for them to pull together, because I didn't really know what I was asking for. I said, okay, which if funny because I was looking for historic notes on this musical comedy called 'Oh, Kay!', then he brought me back something I didn't need at all. Next we went to the record archives to listen to sounds. Unfortunately, if you want to listen to anything, you have to make an appointment a week in advance, because everything has been moved for digitizing. Go figure. It was fun anyway, in a way. heh.

the zoo

Someone snuck this picture of me.

I live four blocks from the National Zoo. If I get up at six, I can hear the primates from my bathroom. The hippo, who has lived there for 27 years, is being removed this year to make more room for elephants.
