Brendan told me about this band 'Wolves in the Throne Room' the other day. I am generally behind on music these days, so I was pleased to hear their full length 'Two Hunters' that came out a couple of years ago. Instead of the anti-Christian 'fueled by hatred' aesthetics and strange ideas about the power of the individual and Norse gods that is definitive of so much of black metal, these folks sing about mysticism and nature. After all, they live on farms and met at an Earth First Rendezvous, what else would they sing about? While I normally wouldn't trust anyone of the class that calls their meetups 'Rendevous', the music is beautifully haunting and the theme variation and outspoken anti-fascism is refreshing, to say the least... even if Thor is cool.
They have a newer ep called 'Black Cascades' that was released last month that is worth checking out and are currently touring.

Brea told me about this indie horror sleeper The Signal (2007) the other day. Part Videodrome, part In the Mouth of Madness (or Garth Ennis' 'Crossed'), the film is broken into three parts, each following the skewed narrative perspectives of three characters. As rude as it may be to make such acknowledgments, it is amazing how small the budget was ($50,000?) for the quality of the production as a whole. The first two parts were really creepy and at times successfully funny. The ending dragged a bit, but at least no one yelled "death to 'the signal' long live the new flesh!"... though I might have actually liked that better. Overall, it works at bringing up problems of false perceptions in domestic relationships in the U.S., adding a little depth to the film, and is a nice addition to the alternative horror genre.

Barnaby Ward did this rendition for the all Kitty Pryde show and fundraiser for the Oregon Hemophilia Treatment Center coming up this Thursday May 7th in Portland (OR). A preview of some of the works and the address of the show can be found here. I got an email from B.W. today saying a 1/1 edition will be up for auction soon and that prints will be available through floating world. A fine present for both friends and enemies.
