This is a video of John Tsombikos' installation on control society. We had a few discussions about the project before he put it together, and it looks like it turned out well.
A super 8 surveillance projection of the national mall covers the security door. Inside the door is a collage of a neighborhood made of found convenient store trash from the represented space. The security gate functions as an "eyelid of capital", while the trash serves as an artifact of the current mode of production. The scales of state and capital are compressed into these overlapping representations, and the two button binary of open or closed is made readily available to viewers who are encouraged in writing to leave the gallery.

Documentary clip on 'Elephant'
'Hunger' trailer
I saw the film 'Hunger' last night. It reminded me a bit of Alan Clarke's 'Elephant'. Both films attempt to represent 'the troubles' of Northern Ireland by addressing acts of political violence. 'Elephant' focuses on random assassinations, keeping it unclear whether it is IRA or Royalists doing the killing, and 'Hunger' on the prison as a totalizing colonialist space, where violence and humiliation rule every hour of every day. The long shots in both serve to keep you anxious for dialog or some kind of explanation that never really comes complete.

A few years old, but still one of the best post-power violence bands to grace us with the beauty of song. Is it the lighting, or do his arms move faster than video?
