Hellblazer and Housing Projects

I always return to these Hellblazers for inspiration. This is from #80, which, though published in 1994, still has a really 1980s feel to me. Maybe it's because my hometown of Marshall, Texas in 1994 was like a time capsule from 1987, or maybe its the color and Steve Dillon's pencils.

In these issues, Constantine is running from the devil against the background politics of impending race riots. I like his seeming vulnerability throughout, or, really, everyone's vulnerability in the confrontation.

Before he got into working on celebrity themes with Kurt and Courtney and Biggie and Tupac, unfortunately two separate films, Nick Broomfield was known for his social documentaries. Though a bit earlier, 'Behind the Rent Strike' (1979) captures the public housing setting well. The scene of the officer giving a talk to children about 'the hate the police attitude' is priceless. He could have been a model for Dillon's work. These are the children of the housing projects being lectured to at school, first by the Gideons, then by a policeman:
